Hispanic American Music

Hispanic American music covers the folk and popular traditions of Spanish-speaking America, from Mexican son and ranchera to Andean music, Colombian cumbia and the nueva canci贸n songwriting that spread across the continent after the 1960s. Its core instrumentation is string-based, built on Spanish and Indigenous instruments such as the guitar, charango, quena, zampo帽a, bombo and caj贸n, often joined by harp, accordion and brass. Singers including *Violeta Parra*, *Mercedes Sosa* and *Atahualpa Yupanqui* made the repertoire a vehicle for social chronicle, protest and regional identity, sung in Spanish with close vocal harmonies and narrative texts.
