Huayno

Huayno

Huayno (wayñu) is the principal folk song and dance of the Peruvian and Bolivian highlands: a lively couple dance in 2/4 whose pentatonic melodies, sung in Quechua, Spanish or both, treat love, landscape, work and migration. Its sound changes by region — the saxophone-and-clarinet orchestras of the Mantaro Valley (estilo huanca), the harp-and-violin ensembles of Áncash, the solo-guitar song of Ayacucho associated with *Raúl García Zárate* and *Manuelcha Prado*. Short stanzas close with a faster fuga for stamping dance steps. Voices such as *Picaflor de los Andes* and *Flor Pucarina* made it the soundtrack of Andean migration to the cities.
