Hungarian Folk Music

Hungarian Folk Music

Hungarian folk music comprises the village song, dance and instrumental traditions of Hungary and Hungarian-speaking regions of Transylvania and Moldavia, performed on violin-led string bands, cimbalom, flute, bagpipe and t谩rogat贸. Its repertory includes slow listening pieces, recruiting dances (verbunkos) and the fast paired cs谩rd谩s, alongside laments and ballads in flexible, speech-like delivery. Collected by *B茅la Bart贸k* and *Zolt谩n Kod谩ly* in the early twentieth century, the tradition was revived by the t谩nch谩z dance-house movement and documented by ensembles such as *Muzsik谩s* and the singer *M谩rta Sebesty茅n*.
