Ibiza Trance

Ibiza trance, also called Balearic trance, is the melodic, sun-facing strain of trance music associated with the island of Ibiza and its sunset bars and open-air clubs. Developing in the mid-1990s from trance and the eclectic Balearic DJ tradition, it favours euphoric, major-key melodies, Spanish and classical guitar figures, piano lines and airy pads over moderate tempos, with breakdowns built for dusk and dawn rather than peak-time intensity. Defining records such as *Energy 52*'s "Café del Mar" and the work of *Chicane*, *York* and *Agnelli & Nelson* made the style the soundtrack of the island's golden commercial era.
