Indian Pop

Indian Pop

Indian Pop, or Indipop, is popular music produced in India outside the film industry, sung principally in Hindi and released as albums and singles rather than film soundtracks. It emerged in the early 1980s with *Nazia Hassan*'s disco recordings and expanded rapidly in the 1990s through music television, when acts such as *Daler Mehndi*, *Alisha Chinai*, *Lucky Ali* and *Colonial Cousins* sold albums in the millions. Styles range from bhangra pop and disco to soft rock and singer-songwriter balladry, unified by the album format, the star singer and a visual identity built for television and later streaming.
