Indigenous American Music

Indigenous American Music

Indigenous American music spans the ceremonial, social and narrative musics of the Native peoples of North America and the modern artists who carry them into folk, rock, jazz and hip-hop. Traditional practice centres on song, hand drum, rattle and flute, with vocables and tribal languages bearing ceremonial knowledge. From *Buffy Sainte-Marie* and *Link Wray* through *Robbie Robertson* to *A Tribe Called Red*, Indigenous performers have used contemporary forms to assert identity and sovereignty, joining powwow rhythms and flute traditions to protest song, rock and electronic production.
