Indigenous Andean Music

Indigenous Andean music comprises the traditional musics of the Quechua, Aymara and other Indigenous peoples of the central Andes, spanning present-day Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and northern Chile and Argentina. Performed for ritual, festival and communal life, it is centred on aerophone ensembles of quena and siku panpipes, the charango lute, guitars, harps, violins and bombo drums, with repertories including the huayno dance-song of Peru and the carnival musics of Bolivia. Groups such as *Los Jairas* and *Los Kjarkas* carried these traditions to international audiences, while contemporary artists including *Luzmila Carpio* and *Los Thuthanaka* renew them in modern contexts.
