Indigenous Taiwanese Music

Indigenous Taiwanese Music

Indigenous Taiwanese music is the music of Taiwan's Austronesian peoples — among them the Amis, Paiwan, Bunun, Atayal and Puyuma — encompassing ritual and social song, polyphonic chant and a modern Indigenous-language popular music. The Bunun pasibutbut prayer song and the Amis polyphonic singing of elders such as *Difang* are its best-known traditional forms. Since the 1990s, singers including *Suming*, *Abao* and *Sangpuy* have written rock, folk and electronic music in their own languages, making the Golden Melody Awards' Indigenous categories a centre of Taiwanese musical life.
