Indo Jazz

Indo Jazz

Indo jazz is the fusion of jazz with the classical music of the Indian subcontinent — its raga scales, tala rhythmic cycles and instruments such as sitar, tabla and bansuri. It began in the 1960s when the London-based *Joe Harriott–John Mayer Double Quintet* wrote jazz compositions in Indian modes, and it took a second, more virtuosic form in the 1970s through *John McLaughlin*'s *Shakti*, where jazz fusion technique met Carnatic and Hindustani improvisation. The style demands dual literacy: musicians must improvise both in the jazz sense and within the grammar of raga.
