Inuit Music

Inuit music is the music of Inuit communities across the Canadian Arctic, Greenland and Alaska: older practice centred on the frame drum dance (qilaat), songs embedded in storytelling and hunting life, and katajjaq, the competitive throat-singing game traditionally performed by two women face to face. Modern Inuit musicians carry Inuktitut language and Arctic experience into folk, rock, pop and experimental music — the throat-singing virtuosity of *Tanya Tagaq*, the country and pop of *Susan Aglukark*, the Inuktitut-language recordings of *Elisapie* — asserting cultural survival after missionary suppression of drum dancing thinned the older practice.
