J-core

J-core

J-core is Japanese hardcore techno: the domestic Japanese evolution of gabber, UK hardcore and happy hardcore, produced largely within the doujin (self-published) music scene. Tracks typically run at or above 170 BPM, layering distorted kick drums with bright piano leads, anime and video-game samples and dense, maximal arrangements. Centred on circles and labels such as #HARDCORE TANO*C# and artists including *DJ Sharpnel*, *REDALiCE* and *t+pazolite*, it circulates through Comiket releases and rhythm-game licences rather than through clubs alone. Its defining trait is absorption: hardstyle, speedcore, dubstep and artcore are folded into a melodic, hyper-detailed sound that European hardcore rarely attempts.
