Jaipongan

Jaipongan is a Sundanese dance music of West Java, Indonesia, created in the late 1970s by choreographer and musician *Gugum Gumbira* from the older ketuk tilu entertainment tradition. A small gamelan-derived ensemble led by virtuoso kendang drumming and a prominent female singer, the sinden, supports couple dancing marked by hip and shoulder movement drawn partly from pencak silat martial arts. Its songs address love, money, work and village life in Sundanese, and its propulsive, shifting patterns made it the defining popular sound of West Java.
