Javanese Gamelan

Javanese Gamelan

Javanese gamelan is the bronze percussion orchestra of Central Java, built around tuned gong-chime instruments — metallophones such as the saron and gender, kettle gongs, and the great hanging gongs that mark the largest cycles. Developed over centuries in the royal courts of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, the music unfolds in layered, cyclical textures: a core melody moves slowly on bronze keys while faster instruments subdivide, punctuate and ornament around it, guided by drums. Two tuning systems, sléndro and pélog, color its repertory of gendhing performed for court ceremony, dance and wayang kulit shadow theatre, producing a sound of measured, shimmering calm.
