Jazz Poetry

Jazz poetry is the performance and recording of poetry composed or delivered in dialogue with jazz, where the spoken voice takes the role of a solo instrument over improvised accompaniment. Texts are written to the music's cadences — swinging, syncopated, often built on blues forms — and performers trade phrases with horns and rhythm sections rather than reciting over a backdrop. Rooted in the Harlem Renaissance and consolidated by the Beat generation and the Black Arts movement, the form spans nightclub readings, studio albums and contemporary free-jazz collaborations in which poetry and improvisation are fully integrated.
