Jazzcore

Jazzcore

Jazzcore is the collision of jazz improvisation and harmony with the speed and violence of hardcore punk and metal. It was named and defined by *John Zorn*'s *Naked City*, whose cut-up compositions jump between free jazz, grindcore, surf and film music in seconds, and it extends through *Painkiller*'s ambient-dub extremity, the Italian trio *Zu* and the jazz-metal of *Ephel Duath* and *Shining*. Virtuosity is a given; predictability is the only forbidden move. The name itself signals the method: jazz vocabulary and improvisation forced through hardcore's compression and speed.
