Jerk Rap

Jerk rap is the rap music of the jerkin' movement, a Los Angeles street-dance culture that broke nationally in 2009 behind *New Boyz* and their hit "You're a Jerk". Built on minimal, bouncy synth beats made for the jerk, reject and pindrop moves, and delivered in a playful, fashion-obsessed teen voice, it briefly carried West Coast party rap into the pop charts. The name returned in the 2020s when New York's *Xaviersobased* and his 1c34 circle rebuilt jerk rap's staggered bounce with plugg, digicore and cloud-rap tools, turning jerk into an underground microgenre.
