Jersey Sound

The Jersey sound is the house music of Newark and northern New Jersey as it developed in the 1980s around Club Zanzibar and its resident DJ *Tony Humphries*. A sibling of New York garage, it is more melodic, spiritual and song-driven than the beat-centred styles around it: gospel-trained voices such as *Adeva*, *Kenny Bobien* and *Michael Watford* over warm organ, piano and deep, rolling basslines. Labels such as #Movin' Records#, run by *Abigail Adams*, and producers including *Blaze* and *Kerri Chandler* made the Jersey sound a permanent dialect of deep and garage house.
