Jook

Jook is the party rap of Florida, named for the jook joints and the jook dancing of Tampa Bay and Miami, and built from Miami bass: heavy 808 low end, simple chant hooks, call-and-response and tempos set for the dance floor rather than the cipher. Its best-known record is *Buckwheat Boyz*' "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" (2001), produced by *DJ Chipman*, which escaped the regional circuit through an early internet meme. Jook records circulated through local radio, clubs and mixtapes, with Tampa's cranking scene and artists such as *Tom G* and *Tae Bae* sustaining the style.
