Kizomba

Kizomba

Kizomba is a partner-dance music and dance genre that emerged in Angola in the 1980s, fusing the older Angolan semba with Caribbean zouk brought in on records and radio. Its songs move at a slow, sensuous tempo over electronic or band arrangements — a deep, pulsing bassline, gentle guitar and synthesiser figures, and romantic singing, most often in Portuguese. The genre's founding figure is *Eduardo Paim*, whose group *SOS* experimented with the fusion in the 1980s and whose 1994 album "Kambwengo" broke it across the Lusophone world; *Paulo Flores*, *Bonga* and *Anselmo Ralph* carried it forward.
