Klasik

Klasik is the classical repertoire and manner of *gamelan degung*, the small bronze gamelan of the Sundanese courts of West Java, Indonesia. Played on *bonang* kettle gongs, *saron* and *panerus* metallophones, hanging *jengglong* gongs and the *suling* bamboo flute in the five-tone *pelog degung* tuning, klasik pieces are long, largely anonymous compositions of restrained tempo and dense heterophony, preserved by court and radio ensembles such as *Parahyangan* under *Entjar Tjarmedi*. It is the austere, revered core of the degung repertory, set apart from the sung *kawih* and newer *kreasi* styles that grew around it.
