Korean Hip Hop

Korean hip hop is hip hop made in South Korea, performed predominantly in Korean and shaped by the language's syllable-timed flow, which rappers exploit for dense, percussive cadences that switch between Korean and English mid-line. It developed from a Hongdae-centred underground modelled on American East Coast boom bap into one of Asia's largest rap markets, spanning jazz-rap lyricism, G-funk, trap and drill. *Drunken Tiger*'s "Year of the Tiger" (1999) and *Epik High*'s literary, self-produced albums established its artistic canon, while television competition *Show Me the Money* carried the genre to mainstream dominance in the 2010s.
