Kuduro

Kuduro

Kuduro is an Angolan electronic dance music and dance style created in Luanda in the late 1980s and 1990s, when producer *Tony Amado* fused house and techno beats with zouk, soca and Angolan percussion at roughly 140 BPM. Its name, 'hard ass' in Portuguese slang, describes the jerky, athletic dancing drawn from *Jean-Claude Van Damme* films and local moves. MCs chant in Portuguese and Kimbundu over looped, deliberately rough productions. *Buraka Som Sistema* carried the sound from Luanda's musseques to European clubs in the 2000s, and kuduro fed directly into Lisbon's batida scene.
