Ladino Folksong

Ladino Folksong

Ladino folksong is the secular song tradition of the Sephardic Jews, sung in Judeo-Spanish, the language carried from Spain at the expulsion of 1492 into new homes around the Mediterranean and Ottoman world. Its core genres are the romances, narrative ballads of medieval Spanish origin, the narrative and occasional coplas, and the cantigas of love, wedding and lullaby, sung unaccompanied by women for centuries and preserved into the recording era by singers such as *Flory Jagoda* and *Yasmin Levy*, among many others.
