Laika

Laika

La茂k谩, or la茂k贸 tragoudi, "song of the people", is Greece's urban popular song tradition, which grew out of rebetiko after the Second World War and dominated Greek music in the 1960s and 1970s. Centered on the bouzouki and on singers of formidable emotional range such as *Stelios Kazantzidis*, *Grigoris Bithikotsis* and *Marinella*, classic la茂k贸 set the poetry of songwriters including *Vassilis Tsitsanis*, *Manolis Hiotis* and *Giorgos Zampetas* to the dances of the taverna: zeibekiko, hasapiko and tsifteteli. In its contemporary form it remains the mainstream of Greek popular music.
