Latin Folk

Latin folk is an umbrella for the acoustic folk traditions of Latin America as they entered the recording era: singer-songwriters and ensembles working with guitar, charango, quena, harp, and regional forms such as the cueca, zamba, huayno, and son. Its defining modern current is nueva canci贸n, the socially committed songwriting movement of *Violeta Parra*, *V铆ctor Jara*, *Mercedes Sosa*, and *Atahualpa Yupanqui*, which joined indigenous and rural material to poetry and politics. Latin folk albums pair traditional repertoire with original composition, valuing clear storytelling, regional instruments, and the singer's role as witness to collective memory.
