Latin Hip Hop

Latin Hip Hop

Latin hip hop is hip hop made by Latino artists, chiefly in the United States, in English, Spanish and Spanglish, drawing its subjects from barrio life and its sounds from both rap production and Latin music. It began in the Bronx and Los Angeles in the 1980s, when Latino MCs and producers, present at hip hop's birth, began recording under their own banner. *Kid Frost*'s "La Raza" and *Mellow Man Ace*'s bilingual "Mentirosa" opened the commercial era, and the field now runs from Cypress Hill's West Coast funk to Mexico's *Control Machete* and the Spanish-language rap of the wider diaspora.
