Latin Soul

Latin soul is a fusion of African American soul and R&B with Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican rhythms that flourished in New York in the mid-1960s, where it overlapped with the boogaloo craze. Young Nuyorican and Black musicians such as *Joe Bataan*, *Pete RodrÃguez* and *Ray Barretto* set English-language soul singing and horn arrangements over mambo, son montuno and cha-cha-chá rhythms, recording for #Fania Records# and its #Tico# and #Alegre# affiliates. Albums like "Gypsy Woman" (1967) and "Acid" (1968) document a bilingual barrio dance music that fed directly into salsa.
