Leftfield

Leftfield

Leftfield is a loose category of British electronic music of the 1990s, applied to album-oriented dance music that resisted the classifications of house, techno and rave. The term was popularized by the duo *Leftfield*, whose name it echoes, and by the music press to group acts such as *Underworld*, *The Chemical Brothers*, *Orbital* and *The Orb*, who combined club rhythms with dub, rock dynamics, ambient passages and song structures. Rather than a single sound, leftfield denotes an approach: dancefloor functionality subordinated to album-length eclecticism, live performance and experimentation within a broadly accessible frame.
