Leftfield Bass

Leftfield bass is an umbrella term for the experimental wing of bass music that developed in the 2010s in Britain and North America, defined by refusal of dubstep and EDM formulas. Its British current grows from drum and bass and the halftime experiments of *Ivy Lab*, *Eprom* and *Alix Perez*; its American current, centred on the #Wakaan# label, favours psychedelic, freeform sound design in the work of *Liquid Stranger*, *LSDREAM* and *Peekaboo*. Both currents prize intricate synthesis, irregular rhythm and sub-bass weight over anthemic drops; *G Jones*'s "The Ineffable Truth" (2018) is the style's most widely cited album statement.
