Light Music

Light music is a genre of British orchestral music, flourishing from the 1920s to the 1960s, that occupies the ground between classical composition and popular entertainment. Written for orchestra or salon ensemble, it consists of short, melody-led pieces, marches, waltzes, novelty numbers and descriptive miniatures evoking places, moods and characters, crafted with full classical technique but designed for immediate appeal. Composers such as *Eric Coates*, *Robert Farnon* and *Albert Ket猫lbey* supplied the repertory that BBC radio carried into millions of homes, making light music the everyday orchestral sound of mid-century Britain.
