Lo-Fi House

Lo-Fi House

Lo-fi house is a style of house music defined by deliberately degraded fidelity: tape hiss, cassette saturation, muffled high frequencies, wobbling pitch and dusty sampled chords are foregrounded rather than cleaned away. Beneath the surface noise it is conventionally melodic house, built from four-on-the-floor drums, seventh-chord pads, piano fragments and soul or jazz samples, but the worn, compressed finish gives it a nostalgic, intimate character associated as much with home listening as with clubs. The style coalesced online in the mid-2010s around producers such as *DJ Seinfeld*, *Ross From Friends* and *Mall Grab*, partly as a reaction against polished EDM.
