Lovers Rock

Lovers Rock

Lovers rock is the romantic style of British reggae that developed in London in the mid-1970s: soft, soul-influenced love songs sung over polished reggae rhythms, in deliberate contrast to the Rastafari roots music then dominant. Named after the South London label #Lover's Rock#, it was built by producers such as *Dennis Bovell* and *Lloyd Coxsone* and sung first by teenage girls — *Louisa Mark*, whose "Caught You in a Lie" (1975) is counted its first record, and *Janet Kay*, whose "Silly Games" reached No. 2 in the UK in 1979. Jamaican singers including *Dennis Brown* and *Gregory Isaacs* supplied its other wing.
