Lundu

Lundu

Lundu is an Afro-Brazilian song and dance form of Bantu, principally Angolan, origin, documented in Brazil from the eighteenth century. Danced by a couple inside a circle of onlookers, it is built on a strongly syncopated 2/4 pattern, stamped feet, swaying hips and the umbigada, the ritual touching of navels that opens the dance. As a song it favours teasing, humorous or amorous verses over guitar-led accompaniment. Carried to Lisbon salons by *Domingos Caldas Barbosa*, it became the first Black Brazilian form absorbed into Luso-Brazilian art and salon music, and its systematised syncopation passed into the maxixe, the tango brasileiro and ultimately samba.
