Madchester

Madchester was the Manchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s in which indie guitar bands absorbed acid house, funk and rave culture, producing loose, groove-led records built for dancing as much as listening. Named for the city's *Factory Records* and its #Ha莽ienda# nightclub, the sound married jangling guitars and baggy rhythms to drum machines, breakbeats and psychedelic colour, with *The Stone Roses*, *Happy Mondays* and *Inspiral Carpets* as its defining acts and an anti-fashion baggy dress code as its visual signature.
