Mafioso Rap

Mafioso rap is a subgenre of East Coast hardcore hip hop organized around the imagery and narratives of organized crime, particularly the Italian-American and Sicilian Mafia. Pioneered by *Kool G Rap* in the late 1980s and codified in the mid-1990s, it pairs cinematic, sample-based production — drawing on soul, jazz, and film scores — with detailed first-person accounts of racketeering, drug distribution, loyalty, and betrayal, delivered through adopted mob personas and aliases. Against the street-level reportage of gangsta rap, mafioso rap emphasizes hierarchy, ceremony, and conspicuous luxury: tailored suits, champagne, and the codes of a criminal aristocracy.
