Maghrebi Music

Maghrebi music is the umbrella for the musical traditions of the Maghreb (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia), where Arab, Berber (Amazigh), Andalusian, sub-Saharan and Mediterranean elements have mixed for a millennium. It spans the Andalusian classical suites preserved in Fez, Algiers and Tunis, Moroccan chaabi and gnawa trance music, Algerian ra茂, Kabyle song and the Tuareg guitar styles of the Sahara. Performers from the chaabi master *El Hadj Muhammad El Anka* to ra茂 stars *Khaled* and *Cheb Mami*, the Kabyle singer *Idir* and the desert blues of *Tinariwen* illustrate its range within one shared modal and percussive language.
