Mahori

Mahori is one of the three classical ensemble types of Thailand, a mixed chamber orchestra that combines instruments of the piphat percussion ensemble, its xylophones, gong circles and drums, with instruments of the string ensemble, including the saw sam sai fiddle, jakhe zither and khlui flute. Developed in the royal courts, where it was traditionally performed by women, the mahori accompanies singing and is the most flexible of Thai classical formations. Its interlocking parts realise a composed melody through constant idiomatic variation, the idiom documented abroad by *Fong Naam* of *Bruce Gaston* and *Buyong Ketkhong*.
