Mahraganat

Mahraganat, also called electro-shaabi, is an Egyptian electronic dance genre that emerged from Cairo's working-class districts in the mid-2000s, fusing shaabi wedding music with EDM, hip hop and reggaeton. Wedding DJs such as *DJ Figo*, *Sadat* and *Alaa Fifty* built the sound in home studios with basic software: maqsoum patterns from sampled tabla and duff, detuned synth leads imitating the mizmar, and heavily Auto-Tuned chanting. Distributed free through phones, internet caf茅s and tuk-tuks rather than radio, mahraganat became the dominant sound of Egyptian street celebration and a flashpoint in national debates about taste and class.
