Makossa

Makossa is a Cameroonian popular music and dance style that emerged in Douala in the 1950s and 1960s, named from a Duala word for dance. Built on a propulsive bass line, interlocking guitars, horns and call-and-response singing in Duala, French and Pidgin, it was carried worldwide by saxophonist *Manu Dibango*, whose "Soul Makossa" (1972) became an international hit sampled across funk, disco and hip hop. Singers and bandleaders including *Sam Fan Thomas*, *Ekambi Brillant* and *Andr茅-Marie Tala* made makossa the defining sound of Cameroon and a cornerstone of modern African pop.
