Maloya électronique

Maloya électronique, often called electro maloya, is the electronic reinterpretation of maloya, the traditional music of Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Producers such as *Jako Maron*, *Jérémy Labelle* and *Dominique Iva* rebuild maloya's ternary percussion patterns, rouler drum and kayamb shaker with drum machines, modular synthesisers and samplers, frequently sampling archival voices from classic maloya recordings. The result keeps the ritual and protest charge of the source tradition — a music of enslaved and indentured labourers' descendants, once banned for its political associations — while recasting it for clubs and experimental stages.
