Mande Music

Mande Music

Mande music originates from the traditions of the Mande peoples of West Africa, whose cultural heritage dates back to the Mali Empire. It is foundationally a narrative art form, historically performed by *jeli* (griots) who serve as oral historians and social commentators. The sound is defined by the intricate interplay of the 21-string kora, the wooden-keyed balafon, and the ngoni lute, creating complex polyrhythmic and melodic textures. Vocal styles are often powerful and declamatory. The genre's global ascendance began in the post-colonial era, influencing countless musicians and shaping the 'world music' category.
