Manguebeat

Manguebeat (mangue beat) is the Recife movement of the 1990s that wired Pernambuco's traditional rhythms, maracatu, coco, ciranda and forr贸, into rock, rap, funk and electronics. Its emblem is the mangrove crab with a computer chip: *Chico Science & Na莽茫o Zumbi* set maracatu na莽茫o drumming under distorted guitars and rapping, *Mundo Livre S/A* played samba-inflected rock with manifesto irony, and the scene's 1991 manifesto "Caranguejos com C茅rebro" demanded antennas in the mud, local roots plugged into global circuits. Manguebeat revived Recife's culture industry and remains the reference point for Brazilian regional fusion.
