Manx Folk Music

Manx Folk Music

Manx folk music is the traditional music of the Isle of Man, the Celtic island nation between Ireland and Britain, encompassing Manx Gaelic song, fiddle and harp tunes, hymn-like carvals and the dance repertoire collected by Mona Douglas and the Manx Folk Dance Society. Long overshadowed by its Irish and Scottish neighbours and tied to a language declared extinct in 1974, the tradition was revived from the 1970s by collectors, the Yn Chruinnaght festival and Culture Vannin. Its modern exponents — *Ruth Keggin*, singing in Manx Gaelic, and instrumental groups such as *King Chiaullee* and *Barrule* — present the island's tunes and songs to international Celtic audiences.
