Māori Music

Māori Music

Māori music is the music of the indigenous Māori people of Aotearoa New Zealand, encompassing waiata song traditions maintained as oral history and the taonga pūoro family of instruments — flutes such as the kōauau and pūtōrino, conch trumpets and whirled instruments such as the pūrerehua. Suppressed under colonisation, the instrument tradition was revived from the 1980s by *Hirini Melbourne* and *Richard Nunns*, while waiata action songs, kapa haka performance and te reo songwriting by artists including *Maisey Rika* and *Rob Ruha* sustain the tradition in contemporary forms.
