March

March

The march is a composition in strongly marked duple or compound metre written to regulate the movement of soldiers, and by extension for parades, ceremonies and the concert hall. Its standard design strings together contrasting strains with a melodious trio section, and it is scored pre-eminently for wind band: brass, woodwind and percussion. *John Philip Sousa*, the American 'March King', fixed the genre's recorded canon with marches such as "Semper Fidelis" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever"; European traditions run from *Julius Fu膷铆k*'s "Entrance of the Gladiators" to the British marches of *Kenneth J. Alford*.
