Marching Band

Marching band is music performed by large wind and percussion ensembles while moving in choreographed field formations, centred on American universities and high schools. Brass, woodwinds and a battery of snare, tenor and bass drums play fight songs, marches, popular hits and specially arranged show music at high volume for outdoor projection, while colour guard and dance lines add a visual layer. The tradition runs from the military bands of *John Philip Sousa*'s era through the historically Black college bands of the South, whose high-stepping show style, as practised by *Southern University*'s *Human Jukebox*, reshaped the form.
