Medieval Folk

Medieval Folk

Medieval folk is the modern revival of medieval and early music within folk practice: bands performing historical ballads, dances and sacred songs on period instruments — bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy, shawm, vielle, lute — in modern languages and medieval tongues. Centred in Germany, where the acoustic Mittelalter scene complements the amplified mittelalter rock, it runs from the 1970s pioneers *Ougenweide* to *Faun* and *Corvus Corax*, whose concerts and medieval-market circuit made the style a live institution. British groups such as the *Mediaeval Baebes* and *Omnia* in the Netherlands developed parallel, more folk-rooted forms.
