Memphis Rap

Originating in the early 1990s, Memphis Rap is a subgenre of hip hop defined by its raw, lo-fi sonic architecture. It was pioneered by artists like *DJ Spanish Fly* and *Tommy Wright III* using minimalist production tools, including 4-track recorders and Roland TR-808 drum machines. The sound is characterized by hypnotic, droning basslines, sparse synth melodies, and repurposed samples from soul and horror films, creating a dark, menacing atmosphere. Lyrically, it combines aggressive, often double-time flows with grim narratives of street life and occult themes. Initially circulated on self-produced cassette tapes, its influential blueprint shaped the subsequent development of trap and cloud rap.
