Mexican Folk Music

Mexican folk music is the umbrella of Mexico's regional traditional styles: the mariachi and ranchera song of Jalisco, the corrido narrative ballad of the north, the son jarocho of Veracruz, son huasteco, pirekua, chilena and dozens of local sones. Performed by ensembles ranging from mariachi bands of violins, trumpets and guitarrón to jarocho trios of harp, jarana and requinto, the repertory carries Mexico's history — revolution, migration, love and death — in strophic songs and virtuosic dance tunes. It underpins the country's national sound and its diaspora celebrations.
