Microtonal

Microtonal

Microtonal music is music that uses intervals smaller than the semitone of twelve-tone equal temperament, or tunings outside that system altogether, including just intonation and divisions of the octave into 19, 31, 43 or more steps. Its modern practice was founded by theorist-composers such as *Harry Partch*, who built instruments for his 43-tone scale, *Julián Carrillo*, *Alois Hába* and *Ben Johnston*, and it now spans string quartets, retuned guitars and synthesizers, and electronic works by *Wendy Carlos*, *Sevish* and *King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard*.
